Christopher M.A. Brett obtained his B.A. degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, UK, in 1977, and his D.Phil. in Electrochemistry from Oxford University with Prof. John Albery in 1981. In 1981 he was appointed to a Lectureship in Chemistry at Coimbra University. He was awarded the D.Sc. degree from the University of Coimbra in 2002. He is a member of CEMMPRE, Research Unit 285 of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

- Novel electrode materials, nanostructured materials, surface–modified electrodes and conducting polymers
- Electrochemical enzyme biosensors
- Sensors for electroanalysis of trace species using flow and injection systems
- Metallic corrosion and its inhibition, dental amalgams in biological fluids,
- Electrochemistry in ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents
- Kinetics and mechanism of electrode processes.

Co-editor of special issues of Electrochimica Acta (1998, 2004, 2012 (to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry) 2018), Analytica Chimica Acta (1999), Pure and Applied Chemistry (2001), Analytical Letters (2004, 2006), and Microchimica Acta (2008, 2010).
